Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return is the most humane and effective method of controlling the population of free roaming Community cats. The behaviors and stresses associated with mating like yowling and fighting diminish. At the time of surgery the cats are vaccinated against rabies and other cat diseases which keeps them healthier.The cats also receive flea & worm treatment, a microchip and a left ear crop to show they have been sterilized. Colonies are stabilized by T-N-V-R which means no more kittens! The method is endorsed by The Humane Society of the United States , the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Ally Cats Allies, New York City Feral Cat Initiative a Program of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC'S Animals.
HOW TO IMPLEMENT A T-N-V-R PROGRAM IN YOUR COMMUNITY Although every community faces different circumstances when it comes to implementing a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return Program, Purrzilla Cat Rescue, Inc. recommends the following seven steps:
1. Assess the Community Cats and their locations.
2. Designate a Community Cat Advocate/ Coordinator.
3. Establish the trapping plan.
4. Determine the funding plan.
5. Set up the Veterinary/ Spay Neuter care plan.
6. Organize your community outreach program to educate the Residents and promote services, and build support.
7. Evaluate the progress and success of your T-N-V-R program.
